Throughout the summer and into the fall, we’ll be counting down the days until the Edmonton Oilers begin their 2023-24 season with a daily trip down memory lane.
Welcome to the reviews of the previews. Last offseason, I took a look at 29 players who played for the Oilers in the 2021-22 season. I wrote about their season as a whole, and how I projected them for this past 2022-23 season.
Game 4 between the Oilers and Kings in Los Angeles is pivotal. It’s not technically a must-win for the Oilers, but everybody knows deep down that this is a must-win.
Welcome to the annual wrap-up of the most-read articles of the last year! This was a fun one. Jason Gregor dropped this piece on June 7th, a day after the Oilers were eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche, and he had tons of juicy information.
The incident occurred late in the second period of the game, as Oilers forward Dylan Holloway was struggling to move a puck between his legs before launching it at the bench. The puck then clipped Campbell near his eye, and the goalie went to the locker room and didn’t return for the remainder of the game.
All in all, not a bad summer for GM Ken Holland. However, he told TSN 1260 that he might not be done with his offseason work just yet:
It looks like Mike Smith’s career in the NHL is coming to an end. Though this had been speculated for weeks, Ken Holland told reporters on Wednesday that he doesn’t expect Smith to play during the 2022-23 season.
With the offseason in full swing, it’s time to examine what each squad will need to accomplish over the coming weeks. Next up is a look at the Oilers.
The 2022 NHL Draft is tonight and rumours and speculation are running wild. Here’s a roundup of interesting information from Wednesday as everyone arrived
I love a good fireworks display. And going into next year’s NHL season, I have my eye on a few situations that could prove explosive.
A few news and notes from the last day or two… Edmonton Oilers franchise players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl wrapped up all-time playoff performances this year by scoring 33 and 32 points, respectively.
Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mike Smith is “highly likely” to land on the long-term injured reserve, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Thursday. Smith is believed to have played through various injuries that hampered him throughout the 2021-22 campaign.
The Oilers are “ready to oblige” and are already speaking with “at least four teams” in order to secure as high of a return as possible.
The future is muddy for Mike Smith. He wasn’t shy in noting during his exit press conference with the media last week that he didn’t know about his future in the NHL.
We previously covered how Mike Smith told the media that he was undecided on playing next season, and we also don’t have full confirmation on whether defenseman Duncan Keith will return next season.
The Colorado Avalanche are headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 21 years after sweeping the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final.
Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin scored a pair of goals, and goaltender Pavel Francouz made 27 saves to lead the way for Colorado.
A rollercoaster season for Smith continued into the playoffs, but the netminder keeps fighting and finding success.
It wasn’t the start to the postseason that the Edmonton Oilers were looking for, as they lost Game 1 to the Los Angeles Kings 4-3.
Goaltender Mike Smith featured well for the Oilers, stopping 31-of-32 shots en route to his ninth win of the season. But what caught the attention of many was a wild sequence midway through the third period.
Goaltending, yet again, was front and centre in Edmonton’s loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday. Mike Smith was shelled for four goals by the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday and the veteran said that he wanted to get back in the net immediately and Dave Tippett gave him the green light.
The Oilers have a veteran netminder who can't stay healthy, another who's sparring with a coach and an unkown commodity thrust into a bigger role than expected.
The Edmonton Oilers will be without their preferred starter in net for a little while.
Smith, 39, has played in just three games this season after suffering an early injury and then experiencing a setback in his recovery. He did stop 92-of-100 shots during that short period at the beginning of the year.
Oilers head coach Dave Tippett told him that “it is a concern for sure” and that Smith will get more imaging back in Edmonton to evaluate the issue.
