Blue Jays place All-Star OF George Springer on 10-day IL with elbow inflammation

The Toronto Blue Jays currently sit atop the American League Wild Card standings but have just a slim two-game advantage over the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners.

If they hope to keep pace in the playoff hunt, they'll have to do so without All-Star outfielder George Springer for the foreseeable future.

On Saturday, the Blue Jays placed Springer on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

Springer has reportedly been dealing with elbow soreness for several weeks. According to the team, he'll receive an anti-inflammatory shot but isn't expected to miss more than 10 days of action.

Through 89 games, Springer is batting .251/.331/.464 with 18 home runs and 49 RBI.

The Blue Jays recalled Otto Lopez to fill Springer's spot on the active roster.

The 23-year-old has seen action in just one major league game this season. Lopez appeared as a defensive replacement on June 21 against the Chicago White Sox. Last season, he also appeared in just one game, striking out in his lone at-bat.

Through 66 games for Single-A Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo, Lopez is batting .248/.338/.391 with three home runs, 27 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
