Yankees legend Mariano Rivera disagrees with decision to retain Aaron Boone

New York Yankees legend and all-time great closer Mariano Rivera has made it clear he wouldn't bring Aaron Boone back as manager if he were running the storied franchise.

"If I'm the owner, Aaron Boone wouldn't stay," Rivera said while speaking at the Sports Forum of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives, per comments translated by Alex Smith of SNY. "When things don't come out the way we want them to all of the fault goes on the manager and somebody has to pay the price and we won't put that on the players..."

As noted by both SNY and an ESPN video, the Hall of Famer who is MLB's career saves leader offered his take before Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner declared on Wednesday he intends to keep Boone as his manager through the upcoming offseason.

"As far as Boone’s concerned, we just signed him and for all the same reasons I listed a year ago, I believe he is a very good manager," Steinbrenner explained. "I don’t see a change there."

Analysts and fans alike have blasted both Boone and general manager Brian Cashman ever since the Yankees were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. Cashman's contract expires after the World Series, and it's unknown if he'll be given another opportunity to construct a roster meant to take the organization back to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2009.

Boone has accumulated a 427-281 record across his five regular seasons as Yankees skipper. However, the 49-year-old holds a postseason record of 14-17 during his New York stint that seemingly isn't ending anytime soon.

Boone and the Yankees put pen to paper on a three-year contract that includes a club option for 2025 last October.
