The Milwaukee Bucks sign Thanasis Antetokounmpo with their last roster spot
USA TODAY Sports

Recent speculations that Thanasis Antetokounmpo will get the remaining spot with the Milwaukee Bucks turned out to be true.

After a report by Harris Stavrou, who covers professional basketball in Greece and Europe, revealed the purpose of Antetokounmpo’s US trip is to sign an NBA contract, it didn't take long for the rumor to become formal.

Thanasis was always favored to return to the Bucks

The six-foot-seven Antetokounmpo was reportedly favored to secure the remaining spot even if the Bucks need a true point guard to back up Jrue Holiday.

Milwaukee’s need to acquire a quality backup playmaker arose when Jevon Carter left the team in favor of the Chicago Bulls.

Thanasis is the brother of Milwaukee's main man Giannis. The 6-foot-7 Thanasis has been with the Bucks for the past four seasons, and he has averaged 2.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.4 minutes per contest in that time span.

Before joining Milwaukee, Thanasis had a very brief stint with the New York Knicks, where he played for just two games as part of a 10-day contract in 2016.

National team duties

From New York, Thanasis played professionally in Spain and Greece before joining the Bucks in 2019.

Thanasis and Giannis were included in the initial squad of the Greece national team that will play in the upcoming World Cup in the Philippines.

While Thanasis is expected to play for the Greek team, Giannis is questionable after he went through a knee procedure to clean up some loose cartilage in his left knee.

It remains uncertain if Giannis would be fit enough to play for Greece as the World Cup is set to begin on August 25th.
