Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence on Urban Meyer: 'I still respect him'

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer vowed Tuesday to "earn" the trust of his players back after he did not return with the team following their loss at the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday and later went viral due to controversial videos that featured the married coach having some unfortunate interactions with a young woman at a Columbus bar.

On Wednesday, rookie quarterback and first-overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence went to bat for Meyer.

"I think everything’s been right on schedule like normal. I think we’ve operated well," Lawrence explained while answering questions, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "But at the end of the day, I can speak for myself for sure and I think — or I know most of the team feels this way: He’s still my head coach. I still respect him, regardless of what happens. Like I said, we’re a team and we’re figuring it out. So, we’re all good. We had a great day of practice today and we’re all still working."

Lawrence's comments came roughly 24 hours after NFL insider Michael Silver tweeted a thread that included a report one player said Meyer "has zero credibility" in the locker room.

"I think he’s done right by us," Lawrence continued about Meyer. "And we’re a team and we’re sticking together. Just because something happens that puts a little stress on it, that doesn’t mean you give up and just go your separate ways. You figure it out and work through it. So that’s what we’re doing and I feel good about our team. Nothing’s changed. We’re still really tight. So we’re just looking forward to playing the Titans this weekend and getting back on track."

Lawrence added he "didn’t have an issue" with Meyer not being on the plane back to Florida with the team because the coach has family in Ohio.

The signal-caller is celebrating his 22nd birthday on Wednesday as part of an 0-4 club that will welcome the 2-2 Tennessee Titans to town this Sunday and that may part ways with its first-year coach before Halloween. Needless to say, Lawrence isn't at Clemson anymore.
