Jay Gruden calls Robert Griffin III unprepared in playing career amid online debate

Gruden wasn’t interested in taking that lying down, though. He fired back at his former quarterback, accusing him of not being prepared. He wrote, “U weren’t prepared Robert ?”

Of course, in this back and forth, Griffin got another shot in, wondering if it was actually Gruden who wasn’t prepared for their time together.

“You told me you didn’t know how to coach a QB who could throw and run like me, so looks like you weren’t prepared Jay,” Griffin shot back.

Robert Griffin III was the quarterback in Washington from 2012 through the 2015 season. During that stretch, Washington had two head coaches. First, Griffin played for Mike Shanahan before Jay Gruden took over. In 2015, Gruden led Washington to the playoffs, the second time that happened while RGIII led Washington.

Overall, Jay Gruden coached Washington for more than five seasons, getting fired in his sixth with the franchise. He had a 35-49-1 record with 2015 being his only playoff appearance.

For his part, Robert Griffin III won the Rookie of the Year and went to the Pro Bowl his first season in Washington. However, he was hampered by injuries and never got back to that level of play. His last NFL season was in 2020 with the Ravens.

Since getting out of the NFL, Robert Griffin III has gone into broadcasting and analysis of the game. He ended up making headlines in that role, calling for the Dallas Cowboys to move on from head coach Mike McCarthy and hire Deion Sanders instead.

“The bottom line is, guys, I hate calling for coaches jobs. It’s just not what I do. But it’s got to be the coach. You’ve had three consecutive 12-win seasons, nothing to show for it. It’s been 28 years since you’ve won a conference championship or Super Bowl,” Griffin said.
