NFL responds to Richard Sherman burglary domestic violence arrest

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested early Wednesday morning near Seattle following an alleged burglary and domestic violence incident that reportedly involved him scuffling with police outside of a residence and being apprehended with the use of a police K9 unit.

Later in the day, the NFL released a statement regarding the three-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler.

"Free agents are eligible to sign with any team," the league explained. "The league investigates any incident involving law enforcement and if there is a violation of the personal conduct policy the player would be facing discipline."

Sherman currently serves as a vice president on the NFL Players Association executive committee, and the NFLPA responded to the news without directly mentioning the cornerback:

"We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved. We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us."

Ashley Moss, Sherman's wife, told the Seattle Times that Sherman did not hurt anybody early Wednesday.

"My kids were not harmed in the incident," she said. "He's a good person and this is not his character. We're doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured."

The Washington State Patrol is reportedly also investigating the CB after a vehicle said to belong to Sherman struck a cement barrier and was ultimately abandoned.

Logic suggests no team will approach Sherman with anything resembling an offer until more is known about his arrest and his availability for the upcoming campaign.
