Robert Griffin III bellyflops into Jacksonville Jaguars pool before Monday Night Football vs. Cincinnati

Griffin’s bellyflop was quite the lead-in to Jacksonville’s Week 13 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals (5-6), a game in which the Jaguars are looking to join the Miami Dolphins (9-3) and Baltimore Ravens (9-3) atop the AFC. 

Griffin is in Jacksonville Monday night one day after appearing on the ESPN panel to discuss the final College Football Playoff Rankings. SEC champions Alabama (12-1) was awarded the fourth and final spot over ACC champion Florida State (13-0). The Seminoles became the first undefeated power-five conference champion to be omitted from the College Football Playoff.

College Football Playoff selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said that the season-ending leg injury to quarterback Jordan Travis played a big role in Florida State being left out.

“We had eight really good teams this year, right?” Corrigan said. “Somewhat of a unique year in the last year of the four [team playoff] as we go through this. But looking at the player availability was really important to what’s going on, and I think someone said it there, you can lose a running back, you can lose a wide receiver, but a quarterback as dynamic as Jordan Travis, it changes their offense in its entirety. That was really a big factor with the committee as we went through everything.”

Griffin made the case for why Florida State should have been included in the College Football Playoff.

“This is a team that had more yards in their conference championship game than Michigan had in their conference championship game. So, if we’re talking about offenses, why aren’t we talking about Michigan in this situation?” Griffin said. “For me, with Florida State, what it comes down to is you don’t punish the 100 guys because one guy is not there. Look at what this defense did in the ACC Championship Game. Dominant. Seven sacks. Braden Fiske, I think he had 3.5 sacks. Talking about Jared Verse. They stepped up to the plate. They stepped up their level of play and went and won a rivalry game against Florida, and then went and beat a top-15 team in Louisville.”

Ultimately, Griffin said that the selection committee took the path of least resistance, not the path that he thinks is the best.
