Carlos Alcaraz 'copied a little of Murray, Roger and Novak' in Wimbledon victory claims Juan Carlos Ferrero
Kyodo News

Carlos Alcaraz has been described as 'brave' by his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, after beating Novak Djokovic to claim the Wimbledon title.

Alcaraz beat Djokovic, 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4, to end the Serb's dominant run at SW19.

The Spaniard is the first player to beat Djokovic at the grass major since 2017, and the first to beat him on Centre Court since Andy Murray in 2013.

There were question marks over whether the 20-year-old would be able to adapt his game to grass, but after winning Queen's and Wimbledon he appears to have answered any potential doubters.

Ferrero has revealed the secret to Alcaraz's success on grass, “It's very difficult to say, I think he takes things on board very quickly, and we've also seen a lot of videos of players that move very quickly here.

"So, we copied a little of Murray, Roger [Federer] and Novak, and he tries to copy a little bit the same. In the end, it wasn't easy, but we did it.”

Alcaraz produced a convincing display in his straight sets semi-final victory over Daniil Medvedev, and Ferrero explained that the plan was for him to recreate that performance in the final.

"We said that he would have to play more or less the same level that he played against Medvedev," said Ferrero.

"Medvedev is on the baseline all the time and Carlos likes to use the slice to bring the opponent to the net. That was something we needed to do against Novak, so it was one of the keys to break his rhythm.

"In the end, I think he was very brave in the way he finished the match.”

It is not the first time Alcaraz has won a Grand Slam title, with the world No.1 also triumphing at the US Open last year.

Ferrero spoke about how the team plan to do a 'better' job of resetting before he prepares to defend a major title for the first time.

"He's going to have some rest to reset a little bit and go to the United States feeling powerful and fresh again," revealed Ferrero.

He continued, "I think we've learnt a lot of things after the US Open, so we have to do things a little bit differently here.

"He and the team know this, and I think we are ready to do things a little bit better."

Alcaraz is scheduled to represent Spain at the new Hopman Cup in Nice this week, however after Ferrero's comments his participation seems less likely.
