Former world No. 3 David Ferrer revealed Jannik Sinner is the player who ‘impresses’ him the most while backing him as a future world No. 1.

World No. 8 Sinner has continued to climb up the rankings in recent years and has amassed seven career titles along the way, most recently winning in Montpellier in February.

Sinner also made the final in Rotterdam and Miami and the semi-finals in Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo this season, and Ferrer believes the 21-year-old is closing in on a maiden Grand Slam title.

‘’I consider Jannik a very good player who is improving every year, reaching his goals, and I am sure he will have his chances to win a Grand Slam and become No. 1,’’ Ferrer told Flashscore.

‘’In fact, among the young players he is the one who impresses me the most because of the power of his shots and his margin for improvement, which is still very wide."

When asked about the budding rivalry between Sinner and former world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and whether it could be the predominant one in the future of men’s tennis, Ferrer added: ‘’It could be, but there is no shortage of good players out there.

“There is also Sebastian Korda, who is improving all the time. But at the moment, yes, these are two players who have a clear idea of what their goal is and are very ambitious.

“From this point of view it is a good rivalry because, moreover, they are both good people and I like that. They are humble, respectful and the fact that players of this level are like this is good for the sport in general.’’

Sinner and Alcaraz could meet for a seventh time at the Barcelona Open this week, but the Italian must first fend off countryman Lorenzo Musetti in their quarter-final clash on Friday.
