Former goalkeeper Tommaso Berni admits that he never expected the exits of Milan Skriniar and Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.

Berni spoke to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

It was a dramatic summer for Inter, particularly in the case of players leaving.

On the one hand, there were the departures of players like Andre Onana and Marcelo Brozovic for big fees.

Then some veterans in the squad like Danilo D’Ambrosio and captain Samir Handanovic also departed.

But the two that were really a source of controversy among the fans were those of defender Skriniar and striker Lukaku.

The former made the move to Paris Saint-Germain. He did so on a free transfer after deciding not to extend his contract with Inter.

Naturally, many Nerazzurri fans were unhappy with Skriniar’s decision.

And then in the case of Belgian international Lukaku, the striker had seemingly been on the verge of coming back to Inter on a permanent basis, having been on loan from Chelsea last season.

But the relationship between Inter and Lukaku broke down in shocking circumstances.

Therefore, the 30-year-old made the move to Roma instead.

Berni: Skriniar & Lukaku Exits From Inter Unexpected

Goalkeeper Berni was part of the Inter along with both Skriniar and Lukaku. He left in 2020.

As for whether he would have expected the circumstances of either’s departure, Berni replied “No.”

“Honestly, based on what I saw when I was there, I would never have expected it.”

“But we don’t know the truth,” he noted. “More will certainly come out.”

“Unfortunately, things change in football,” the former keeper reflected. “Ideas and motivations change, and they don’t match up with what someone had in mind before.”

“They were both players who set great examples,” Berni said of Skriniar and Lukaku. “As long as they were at Inter, they always honoured the shirt. Their teammates, the fans, the management.”

“I can only say thank you to them,” he said of the pair.

“They gave me many beautiful memories. We shared some great moments together in the growth of the club.”
