Andrey Rublev survives five set thriller against Thiago Seyboth Wild to reach Australian Open second round

Andrey Rublev navigated his way through an intense five set thriller against Thiago Seyboth Wild to secure his place in the second round of the Australian Open.

After relinquishing a two set lead as well as four match points on his opponent’s serve at 5-6 in the deciding set, Rublev eventually earned a 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6(10-6) victory after three hours and 43 minutes.

With the win, the Russian is now 5-0 on the season after winning the Hong Kong Open earlier this month.

He admitted afterwards that it’s not a match he will be forgetting any time soon.

‘’For sure I will not forget this match," Rublev said post-match.

"Thiago is a super-dangerous player, super-talented when in the mood.''

While the fifth seed admitted to giving up ‘mentally’ during the clash, he realised that this is what could have aided him and allowed him to hit more freely.

‘’When I was losing 4-1, mentally I gave up and maybe that's what helped me in the end,’’ he continued.

‘’I felt it's not my day but then I hit some good serves and good returns.’’

Rublev will face either Taro Daniel or Christopher Eubanks in the next round on Wednesday.
