Fernando Verdasco says 'false positive' coronavirus test cost him French Open spot

Spaniard and former top-10 player Fernando Verdasco took to Twitter on Friday to explain that what he believes to be a "false positive" coronavirus test caused him to be dropped from this year's French Open.

The Associated Press (h/t ESPN) noted that the 36-year-old wrote that he had COVID-19 in August but was asymptomatic. Since then, he had produced negative tests leading up to the Grand Slam until this week. Verdasco added that the French Open bounced him from the competition despite his requests for retesting and that later "unofficial" tests he took at home were all negative.

The main draw for the French Open begins on Sunday.

Back in April, CNN International reported that Juventus star Paulo Dybala tested positive for the coronavirus for at least six straight weeks. The NFL has claimed discoveries of inconclusive or "false positives" on multiple occasions since the start of summer training camp sessions.

The English Premier League, NHL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, PGA Tour, UFC, Major League Soccer, and National Women's Soccer League have also, at different times, questioned the accuracy of COVID-19 tests since the pandemic began affecting competitions in March.
