'It would be stepping back,' Boris Becker turns down a lucrative offer to coach Novak Djokovic as he refuses to go down the same road again

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has been without a head coach ever since he announced the shocking exit of Goran Ivanisevic from his team. Since then, Nole has played in just one tournament, making the semi-finals at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters

Nole didn’t sign up for any event in the week following the Monte Carlo Masters. He was scheduled to play in this week’s Madrid Masters but made a late withdrawal from the event. As the hunt for a head coach continues, former coach Boris Becker was recently questioned about whether he would take up the job.

Becker worked with Djokovic for three seasons, from 2014 to 2016. Together, they won six singles Grand Slam titles, which included twin wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The German guided Nole to his maiden French Open title and also his second US Open title. But he believes joining Nole isn’t good.

He's always going to be a close friend of mine, we always speak about tennis. But I couldn't possibly be his coach again, because I've done that. It would be stepping back. Said Boris Becker as per The Telegraph.

Becker also expressed his take on the whole coaching situation. He claimed the Serb is looking for something different currently. But the German also raised the question of whether Djokovic knows what he wants going forward, as he remains without a head coach weeks before his title defense at the 2024 French Open.

Boris Becker believes Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal is in line with his Olympic ambition

Following a shocking third-round exit in Indian Wells, the World No. 1 withdrew from the Miami Masters as well. Madrid is the second tournament in recent times from which Djokovic has pulled out. While he is not nursing any injuries, the withdrawals are quite surprising for his fans.

But for Becker, he believes it is part of strategy. The Olympic gold is the only missing item from Djokovic’s large trophy cabinet. Although he won the singles bronze medal at the 2008 Games, his ambition remains for the gold medal.

I was surprised by his Madrid decision. I think at this stage he needs matches. He needs the competition. But he has his own schedule. I think winning the Gold for Serbia is his main tournament so maybe he's already scheduling himself to be fresh for July. This could be a reason. You can never underestimate or count him out. Added Boris Becker.

The Paris Olympics begin on July 26. The 2024 Wimbledon is scheduled from July 1 to July 14. This will leave only 12 days for the players to switch from grass to clay, making things tricky. Knowing this, it seems Djokovic has already planned out his season to be fully ready to grab the gold this year.
