'It would be unfortunate if we don’t play,' Maria Sakkari admits to highest ambitions in doubles at the Olympics, despite Stefanos Tsitsipas’ ambiguity

At the start of the year, there was news about Sakkari and Tsitsipas teaming up for the mixed doubles. However, while Sakkari wants to play all three, she feels that Tsitsipas doesn’t want to play mixed doubles.

Notably, they were one of the most trending mixed doubles pairs after Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz. However, after the recent tweet, it is unclear who can make it in place of Tsitsipas. No other Greek player ranks at the top with him, and even his brother Petros Tsitsipas falls a little short in ranking to make it for the mixed doubles.

Greek tennis has taken quite a hit over the last couple of months. Although Stefanos Tsitsipas started the year great, he did fail to go deep in many tournaments, resulting in his loss of rankings. On the other side, even Maria Sakkari has not had any luck and has faced multiple losses at the start. 

Both players were out of the Top 10 and faced a lot of criticism from the media and fans. Sakkari even commented back on one hateful comment, eliciting a plethora of reactions online.

Nonetheless, after a change of coach, Sakkari has had a decent run in her last couple of outings, boosting her right back into the Top 10. However, Tsitsipas is still stuck at No. 12, and his run at the ongoing Rolex Monte Carlo Masters will decide his rank. With hopes of getting back into the Top 10 before the Olympics, Tsitsipas will surely change gears.
