Stefanos Tsitsipas overcomes Jordan Thompson to reach Australian Open third round
Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Stefanos Tsitsipas battled from a set down against Jordan Thompson to secure his place in the third round of the Australian Open for the sixth consecutive year.

Tsitsipas rallied for a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over the home favourite after a gruelling three hours and 36 minutes, saving nine of 11 break points he faced along the way.

The Greek’s serve proved to be the key component throughout the clash, having won 75 percent of points behind his first serve.

‘’At this very moment, I only remember the last point, the way it finished,” said Tsitsipas post-match.

“The adrenaline and the rush that I got out of this match was insane tonight. You live for these kinds of matches.’’

Throughout the majority of the match, it felt like things could have gone either way.

Tsitsipas acknowledged that both players ‘peaked’ at some point during the clash, essentially forcing each other to produce the best possible tennis.

“The intensity was there,’’ he added.

‘’We were both able to peak in terms of our tennis at some point during the match. Jordan was fighting.

‘’I was serving for the match, he had an incredible comeback.’’

With the win, Tsitsipas improved to 3-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

The seventh seed will take on Luca Van Assche in the next round on Friday after the Frenchman upset 25th seed Lorenzo Musetti in his second-round match.
