'This is a tough one to take,' Andy Murray reveals scary injury update rupturing two fibular ligaments at the Miami Open
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Andy Murray ’s poor season took another disappointing turn, as he hit two more injuries during his last match at the 2024 Miami Open. The Brit was up against Tomas Machac in his first third-round match of the year. Though he put up a great fight, taking the match to the third set tie-break, the Czech emerged victorious 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5).

However, toward the end of the game, Murray took a medical timeout, as he held on to his ankle in pain. Despite this, he finished the game and walked out with his head held high. Post the match, the Brit revealed the details of his ankle pain, which turned out to be a ligament rupture.

In an Instagram post, Murray mentioned that he ruptured two fibular ligaments — a full rupture of the ATFL, and a near-full-thickness rupture of the CFL. Furthermore, he also stated that he will without a doubt be out of the game for a while, but promised to come back when the time is right.

Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL. I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right. posted Murray on his Instagram.

The whole world witnessed the grit on display from Murray, who fought despite the pain in his ankle. Even though the Brit lost the match, he won full points for keeping up the fighting spirit.

Andy Murray bid an emotional goodbye to the Miami Open fans

British ace Andy Murray exited the Miami Open one last time as he suffered a major defeat against Tomas Machac. It was a battle of resilience, as both the players fought for every point, taking the game till the third-set tie-break and subsequently crossing the three-hour mark.

Machac emerged as the survivor of the Murray scare in the end, as the Brit was left disheartened at the Miami Open. He took his time to walk off the court, thanking the crowd and even signing a few souvenirs for the fans. It might be the last time that Miami will see the British ace competing.

This injury has put Murray on the sidelines again, adding to his misery. The tennis world awaits further news from the Brit, who will not be seen on court for a while.
