Watch: 'Little sis' Serena Williams graces the audience at Venus Williams’ opening match at the Miami Open
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Venus Williams faced Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the round-of-128 of the 2024 Miami Open and ended up suffering yet another disappointing defeat. The 19-year-old defeated the 7-time Grand Slam (singles) winner 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets.

With this, Venus Williams has lost four of her last five matches in professional tournaments. However, the 43-year-old continues to get the constant support of one person and that is her sister, Serena Williams.

Serena Williams was present at the Miami Open Tennis Garden to witness her sister’s match. In fact, it was she who motivated Venus Williams to take part in the Indian Wells and the Miami Open to begin with, as was revealed by the elder sister a few months ago.

Venus Williams was very disappointed with herself after her crushing defeat against Greet Minnen in the first round of the 2023 US Open. She lost 1-6, 1-6, against the Belgian in straight sets and it was kind of a wake-up call for the American. However, it was Serena who motivated her at that time.

“My little sister, Serena, told me I’m not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit. But it’s the mandate. She said no, so I will be back on the court” said Venus Williams in an interview back in January. (Source: Tennis.com)

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are perhaps two of the most decorated players in the history of women’s tennis. Besides having 23 and 7 Grand Slam singles titles, respectively, the sisters also have 14 doubles Grand Slam titles together. They have had each other’s backs since childhood, and are still going strong.

Venus Williams fails to bring an end to her losing run

Venus Williams finally made her return to tennis in the 2024 Indian Wells, after receiving wildcard entry into the tournament. She lost to Nao Hibino in the tournament despite winning the first set against the Japanese simply because she could not keep up the momentum till the very end.

She then got wildcard entry into the 2024 Miami Open as well, once again losing to an unseeded player in the tournament. At 43, if at all Venus Williams has to participate, she should ideally just focus on the Grand Slam tournaments so that she can have a chance of adding more jewels to her crown instead of walking over, retiring from matches with injuries or making bad use of wildcards
